Test match action

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
