Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
