Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
